The Samsung Galaxy Note7 was unveiled to the world just over a week ago, and the smartphone has now been launched in India. And it didn't come alone – Samsung also launched the Gear Fit2 fitness tracker, Gear IconX wireless earbuds, and new Gear VR virtual reality headset.
The Note7 is the star of the show of course, and on paper, it seems like the flagship of the year. While the smartphone carries forward the key distinguishers of its predecessors, like the large screen and S Pen stylus, Samsung has made several changes this time around. Starting with the name, Samsung skipped the Note6 moniker and went straight to Note7, in order to align its Note flagships with its S series offerings. Apart from the name change, the Note7 is also considerably sturdier than the Galaxy Note5 (review), thanks to its IP68 waterproof rating – the first for a Note device. Another new addition on the phablet is an iris scanner, which adds an extra layer of security apart from the fingerprint sensor that's embedded into the home button. The Note7 is also the first Samsung device to ship with a USB Type-C port, which comes with OTG support.
The Note7 features a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED QHD display, just like its predecessor, but Samsung has added curves to both edges of the screen. The screen also features HDR support for better contrast. Interestingly, you can change the resolution between HD, Full HD and QHD. The Always On display that was introduced with the Galaxy S7 (review) and Galaxy S7 edge (review) has made its way to the Note7 as well, and displays notifications from native and third-party apps. The screen features Gorilla Glass 5 protection, which has also been applied to the rear glass panel.

Samsung has also made changes to its S Pen stylus. It's waterproof, just like the Note7, which means you can use it underwater. It's also been improved to offer a better writing experience thanks to its finer tip, and ability to sense 4,096 different levels of pressure. The S Pen can also be used to write notes on the Note7's Always On display, create GIFs, magnify details on the screen and even translate text, including 11 Indian languages. Most importantly though, Samsung has addressed the 'Pengate' fiasco of the Note5, meaning the S Pen no longer fits into the slot backwards.
Under the hood, the Note7 is as powerful as they come with an octa-core Exynos 8890 SoC under the hood (Snapdragon 820 in other markets). The smartphone comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which can be expanded by 256GB via microSD. Samsung is also expected to launch a 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM version of the Note7 (it was spotted on TENAA recently), but is yet to confirm this officially.
The cameras on the Note7 are identical to what you get on the S7 duo – a 12MP dual-pixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, PDAF and OIS, and a 5MP selfie camera. The battery on board is a 3,500mAh unit, with support for both quick charging and wireless quick charging. The connectivity options include 4G LTE, VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fiac, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and NFC.
The Note7 runs Android Marshmallow with an improved TouchWiz on top, but is expected to get the Android Nougat update when it rolls out. The Note7 is available in Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium and Black Onyx colours. There's also a new Blue Coral option which features a gold frame and accents, but this variant won't be available in India.
The Note7 has been priced at Rs 59,900, and will go on sale on September 2nd. Those who pre-book the smartphone between August 22nd and August 30th will be eligible to get the new Gear VR headset for Rs 1,990 (regular price Rs 7,290) while stocks last. Samsung has also partnered with Reliance Jio to offer Note7 buyers a free 90-day preview offer.
